TRANSHUMANCES. A documentary project at the heart of the world’s last great nomadic migrations.

We are leaving to join nomadic families across the globe, immersing ourselves in a lifestyle that defines our deep connection to the living world.

This journey will be a 2-year creative mission:

We will spend 4 months exploring different regions and living with several families to document their seasonal migrations on foot. Our goal? To understand the vital interdependencies between humans, animals, and the environment.

It’s easy to skip a place when the weather isn’t perfect…

But Dhankar taught us otherwise. This isn’t just a viewpoint, it’s a pillar of Spitian history. From being the kingdom’s traditional capital to its architecture defying gravity 300 meters above the rivers, the energy here is undeniable.

A few things to know about this site:

- Dhankar means « Fort on a cliff » — a name it carries well.
- It was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom back in the 17th century.
- The complex is built on a 300-metre high spur, overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers.
- You can observe the Alpine Choughs soaring around the ancient walls.

Sometimes, the gray skies are exactly what you need to feel the soul of a place without the distractions.

We found a sense of home again with a family in this remote Himalayan village.

7 years after Thomas’ first visit, we found ourselves back in the tiny hamlet of Pukchung. Chhodon and her family invited us into their sacred family temple.

The day was a blur of tradition and laughter:
✨ Attempting family portraits (while little Tenzin stole every single shot 😂)
🥟 Learning the art of potato-spinach momos by the wood-fired stove
🙏 Finding peace in a moment that felt completely suspended in time.

It’s moments like these that turn a journey into a story we want to share and remember.

In Spiti Valley, prayers are spun everywhere.

If you walk around a village, you’ll quickly notice a prayer wheel in the hands of an elderly.

The wheels are an individual form of spirituality. Inside, mantras are waiting to be released. By spinning them clockwise, the mantras carry the person’s intent, allowing the practitioner to accumulate wisdom and merit.

From the massive wheels at temple gates to the small ones held by elders, they rhythmically pulse through daily life.

The higher you climb, the quieter the world gets 🏔️

Behind her incredible headdress, we met Tenzin Chorung, an encounter that quickly turned into a warm invitation at her home.

In the intimacy of her living room, we flipped through her son’s wedding albums, met her youngest daughter Pema, and shared stories over tea.

The light in her home was so soft and diffused that we just had to capture her portrait.
