The Mauritanian desert
About the expedition

Where the desert
holds ancient secrets

With our charismatic local guides, we will travel across the most impressive dunes and oases of Mauritania in search of traditional ways of life and ancestral cultures that have resisted the passage of time.

Mauritania is one of the last truly wild frontiers, a country larger than France, Spain and Germany combined, and visited by fewer tourists each year than most European cities receive in a single day.

Our expedition is being built with the same philosophy as all Karai journeys: small group, deep access, genuine encounters.

What awaits

Four reasons to cross the desert

Travel across the most dramatic dune landscapes in the Sahara with local Moorish guides who know every ridge and shadow

Tame camels, harvest dates from towering palm trees and spend nights under an impossibly star-filled sky

Meet communities whose ancestral culture and way of life remain largely untouched by the modern world

In-depth photography training across the desert's extraordinary range of light: golden hour, midday heat, night skies
