Mongolia winter expedition
About the expedition

Life alongside the last nomads of the Altai

Our journey will take us across snowy passes, frozen lakes and through the incredible winter scenery of the Altai mountains. Your destination will be our friends' Spring camp in Tavan Bogd National Park, a place that few outsiders have ever witnessed in the winter months.

Once there, you will live alongside the family, accompany them hunting with their golden eagle and spend time with their extended family at their homestead. The yurt camp, warm food and close-knit group make this one of the most intimate expedition experiences Karai has ever offered.

An ice archery tournament, eagle festival, and camel race completes this unique expedition.

Responsibility

Protecting the rangelands

Our commitment in Mongolia supports the protection of rangelands, the foundation of Kazakh nomadic life. This goes directly towards the development of sustainable livelihoods for the communities we visit and the protection of the vital environmental features of their territory.

With a background in humanitarian and development affairs, Karai is particularly careful about the impact of its presence as guests. On top of paying our hosts fairly, we ensure direct financial support to local initiatives.

FAQ

Questions & answers

Everything you need to know before booking. Still have questions? Write to us

Do I need photography experience?
All are welcome, from confirmed amateurs to beginners who only photograph with a cellphone. Photography is first and foremost a tool to get to far away places, connect with fellow human beings, and take in the great beauty of our planet.
What photography gear should I bring?
You'll bring your personal gear. Useful lenses include a prime (50mm, 85mm), a zoom (24–70, 70–200 or even bigger), and a wide (16–35), but any camera will do. Bring a laptop for editing sessions, and enough batteries and memory cards for camp nights. Note that batteries drain faster in extreme cold, bring spares and keep them warm.
How physically demanding is it?
You must be in good overall condition. The 5-day migration involves long daily walks in cold weather (−10°C during the day). Good winter gear is essential. We will provide a detailed equipment list before departure.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
5 nights in high-standard hotels in Ulanbaatar and Ulgii, and 9 nights in traditional yurts during the migration and at Spring camp. Yurts are warm and comfortable, with home-cooked food provided by our embedded cooks, and will accommodate two guests.
Can I cancel my booking?
Unexpected things happen. You can cancel your booking, though the non-refundable deposit remains non-refundable unless we find a replacement in time. Please read our Terms & Conditions for full details.
What vaccinations or documents do I need?
Please check with your doctor for vaccinations specific to Mongolia. Once you pay your deposit, we'll schedule a call to go over visa requirements, international travel, and any other specifics.
Will we be accompanied by a translator?
Throughout the trip, at least one local translator will accompany us, someone who speaks a language you are comfortable with. More than a translator, they are local assets with deep knowledge of the area and its communities.
